Building a Culture of Active Participation Part 1: Why Active Participation is the Ultimate Success Driver

Introduction

This is a short series designed to answer the most common questions people I have worked with tend to have. Hope you enjoy it.

In today’s hyper-competitive business landscape, organizations are constantly searching for the next edge—whether it’s a new technology, a leaner process, or a more compelling customer experience. Yet, research and real-world results consistently point to one factor that outperforms all others: active participation at every level of the organization.

The Data Behind Participation

Disengaged employees are a major risk. Gallup’s research shows that disengagement leads to higher turnover, lower productivity, and increased absenteeism 2.

Projects with effective executive sponsorship are 3.5 times more likely to meet objectives. Prosci’s research shows that “effective executive sponsorship is the greatest contributor to successful change, according to all nine of Prosci’s benchmarking studies” 1.

Companies with highly engaged employees see up to 23% greater profitability. Gallup’s 2024 State of the Global Workplace report highlights that engaged teams outperform on key business metrics, including profitability, productivity, and retention 2.

Toyota’s employee suggestion program has received over 2 million ideas, averaging 250,000 new suggestions per year. This culture of participation has saved the company billions and driven continuous improvement 3.

Why Participation Matters: The Human Engine of Change

Active participation is more than a buzzword. It’s the engine that powers successful change, innovation, and growth. Here’s why:

  • Alignment: When everyone understands and contributes to the organization’s goals, efforts are focused and aligned.
  • Ownership: People support what they help create. Involving employees at all levels builds buy-in and accountability.
  • Speed: Engaged teams adapt faster to change, solve problems more quickly, and spot opportunities others miss.
  • Innovation: The best ideas often come from those closest to the work. A culture of participation unlocks this potential.

The ACMP Standard: Our Guiding Framework

There are many change management frameworks—Lean, Six Sigma, Prosci ADKAR, and more. But for this series, we’ll use the ACMP Standard for Change Management as our “truth.” Why?

  • It’s open and free to access (Download the ACMP Standard).
  • It’s globally recognized and available in multiple languages.
  • It aligns with best practices found in other frameworks, making it a solid foundation for any organization.

If you’re new to the ACMP Standard, I encourage you to download it from the official source and familiarize yourself with its principles. Throughout this series, we’ll reference the ACMP Standard and highlight where other frameworks (like Lean or Six Sigma) reinforce the same core ideas: participation, communication, and continuous improvement.

The Cost of Disengagement

Disengagement is expensive and dangerous:

  • Lack of effective leadership is a top reason big projects fail. Harvard Business Review identifies “lack of effective leadership” as a major project killer 5.
  • Disengaged employees drive up turnover and absenteeism. Gallup’s 2024 report shows that companies with high engagement see up to 51% less turnover and 78% less absenteeism 2.

What to Expect in This Series

In the coming weeks, we’ll break down:

  • The critical role of C-level participation
  • The importance of middle management support
  • How to engage operational teams and frontline employees
  • Common barriers to participation—and how to overcome them

Each post will include actionable strategies, exercises, and real-world examples, all grounded in the ACMP Standard.

Self-Reflection Exercise

Ask yourself:

  • Where do you see active participation thriving in your organization?
  • Where is it lacking?
  • What would be possible if every level—from the C-suite to the front line—was fully engaged?

Write down your thoughts or discuss them with your team. This is your first step toward building a culture where everyone contributes—and everyone wins.
